Sony responds to new PlayStation Plus concerns

Prior to the release of PlayStation Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium, PlayStation Plus subscribers lose subscribers. However, Sony is not too concerned. During a recent earnings call with investors, Sony revealed that PS Plus had 47.4 million subscribers as of March 2022, which is down 600,000 from the previous quarter and 200,000 year-over-year. This is only the second time that PS Plus has seen a quarterly decline, so as you might expect, this news caught the attention of investors.

There is a worrying drop in the news, but Sony defended it noting that the demand to stay at home is dwindling the further the world moves away from the heart of the pandemic. It also reduced the number of monthly active users to this as well. Compared to the previous quarter, there was a decrease of 5 million users, and three million when looking at last year.

“Let me give you the general direction,” Chief Financial Officer Hickori Totoki said of the trend while speaking to investors. “Total playing time is very important. It has been declining annually, but the demand to stay at home was not so strong between January and February in 2021 compared to [the previous year].

Totoki continued, “This is an 8 percent decrease compared to January and February in 2022. Compared to the end of March in 2020, there is a decrease of 5.9 million. [users]. The demand to stay at home was a temporary factor, but after it subsided, it seems to me that the high levels of participation were maintained. “On a mid-range basis, I don’t see much concern about PS Plus. I’m sure the high level of engagement will continue. That’s a positive for me.”

As you’d expect, Sony is anticipating and anticipating the PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium launching next month to bring the needle back in its favour.

We will start renovating [of PS Plus] Totoki concluded that from June onwards in a phased manner we would like it to grow steadily and have the support of users. “I would like you to have high expectations on this matter with me.”

The use of “Great Expectations” may be a hint that Sony is going to have a hit with the revamped PS Plus, but everything we’ve heard so far about it suggests otherwise. What’s more likely is that this is a general PR talk for investors.
